Community 2000

The MCCHIP (Montgomery County Health Improvement Project) Community 2000 coalition was formed in 1995 and is composed of members of law enforcement, city government, the health department, family services, the community action center, local educators, local youth, school nurses, extension services, developmental disabilities services, local churches, and concerned Montgomery County citizens.

MISSION:

 “Improve the overall health and well being of all Montgomery County citizens by increasing health awareness, assessing and prioritizing current community health needs, and empowering residents to take an active role in this ongoing process.”

Long Term Goal:

Reduce ATOD (alcohol, tobacco and other drugs) use among youth by 10% by 2015.

Objectives:

Reduce the percentage of tobacco use by Montgomery County youth by 5% by 2006.

bullet

Reduce the percentage of high school students that drink before the age 15 by 5% by 2007.

bullet

Increase capacity and strengthen leadership of the MCCHIP C-2000 team by recruiting five new members by 2007.

Activities:

Parents Who Care -  an educational skill-building program created for families with children between the ages of 12-16.

Youth Tobacco Prevention Program -  a council of combined youth in grades 6-12 that meet monthly to plan and implement program activities and events to increase tobacco awareness and educate our community on tobacco's adverse effects.

T.A.T.U. (Teens Against Tobacco Use) -  an American Lung Association curriculum peer-tutoring program that focuses on tobacco use prevention with 3rd, 4th, and 6th grades.

NOT (Not On Tobacco) -  a teen smoking cessation program.

bullet

SQUADS -  an environmental campaign focusing on cutting off the supply of tobacco to minors by enforcing laws that prohibit the sale of tobacco to this underage group.

ATOD Free Activities -  in conjunction with the educational programs, MCCHIP Community 2000 will offer special activities free from ATOD (Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs) throughout the year in various communities’ in Montgomery County, for youth and their families.
